Urban Richmond within taunami zone

Simon Bloomberg

New tsunami evacuation maps released by the Civil Defence this week show that large parts of Richmond and Nelson will need to be “evacuated immediately” if a “long or strong earthquake” hits the region. Online maps have been produced by civil

defence groups around the country to identify evacuation zones in the event of a tsunami. The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group released their map on Wednesday and group controller Roger Ball says “a significant proportion of our urban population” is located within one of the three evacua-

tion zones. The colour-coded map shows red, orange and yellow shore exclusion zones for tsunamis of less than one metre, one to three metres and above three metres. Roger says the map makes it clear a “long or strong” tsunami could affect a lot of people” in Nelson and Tasman.

“The map show that we have a lot of lowlying areas, so potentially there are parts of our coast that would be affected by various kinds of tsunami,” Roger says. “The key message is that people need to think about the risk - if you feel a very large earthquake,

Anzac Day services around Tasman keep getting bigger with over a thousand people gathering in Richmond’s War Memorial Gardens and hundreds attending services in the district’s rural towns. There was standing room only in the War Memorial Gardens with many of the estimated crowd of 1400 spilling onto the adjacent footpath and out onto Cambridge St. Services at Brightwater, Wakefield, Tapawera, Murchison, Mapua and Lake Rotoiti were also popular, leaving Richmond-Waimea RSA president Ross Norgate overwhelmed with emotion. “I don’t know what to say - it’s been absolutely wonderful. We easily have as many people as we had last year.”

“These are my uncle Alexander McCulloch’s medals. He was a gunner in the NZEF in the Great War. I thought it would be nice to wear them today.”

“These are for serving with the RNZAF’s 14th Squadron in the Malaysian conflict. I was based in Singapore.”

“I got my medals for serving with the RAF in World War II. I was a radar operator and looked after ground control approach for landing aircraft.”

Anzac Day embraced by Tasman district FROM PAGE 1 Ross says he is especially happy with the increasing number of young people attending the services. He says the schools are teaching children about the significance of Anzac Day and they are embracing that history. “I really enjoy seeing all the young ones here wearing the medals to Anzac Day services. It’s a great tribute to their ancestors and they are wearing history.” Doug and Mary Hill were the guest speakers at the Richmond service which featured hundreds of returned service men and women, including one of the RSA’s oldest members, Graeme Walker.

The 93-year-old veteran served with the 23rd Infantry in Italy from 19431945. Doug spoke about their journey to Gallipoli for last year’s Anzac centenary commemorations. Interestingly, Doug and Mary were following in the footsteps of Doug’s great-grandmother Eliza O’Donnell who visited the grave of her son Jack in Turkey in 1924 - Jack died aged 21 on April 25, 1915, at Anzac Cove. At Brightwater, former Richmond resident Commander Brendon Oakley, spoke of the courage of the Anzacs soldiers. It will help prepare residents on how to react effectively in an emergency.” Roger says the NelsonTasman region is less exposed to tsunami risks than other parts of New Zealand because it is protected by Farewell Spit and the Marlborough

Sounds. However, there is still a danger from earthquakes in Cook Strait and the Taranaki Bight and Roger says their close proximity means there will be little warning if a tsunami hits. “The biggest threat is a local tsunami in the Taranaki Bight, Cook Strait or the Kermadec Trench and, for those events, official warnings may not be possible. What we are saying to people is, if it’s a long or strong scenario you need to move away quickly,” he says. Roger says the maps are

Shade sail returned after article

The shade sail that was stolen from the Tasman Great Taste Trail near Harley Rd last week has been returned by an “anonymous receiver” who handed it into Nelson Police last Thursday. The $1500 sail was stolen from a popular stopping place on the Great Taste Trail earlier this month. Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust chairwoman Gillian Wratt says the thieves would have had to use a ladder to unscrew and cut down the shelter and take it away by a vehicle.

The shade sail was donated by Nelson company TM Covers a year ago. It provided necessary shelter at the top of the hill for riders and those looking for a beautiful view over the region. However, Gillian received some good news on Friday when she found out that senior constable Reuben McCormack contacted the Waimea Weekly to say the shade sail has

been handed into police by an “anonymous receiver.” Reuben’s email says “thanks for the article you wrote on the stolen shade cloth from Harley Road, Tasman. It had the great effect of an anonymous receiver handing it back to the police tonight.” Gillian says she is delighted the sail has been returned and it will be put back in place as soon as possible. She says the positive response to the theft indicates that people regard the cycle trail as a valuable community resource.

Reporting team grows again The Weekly just keeps on growing. Almost 11 years after the Waimea Weekly was founded in Richmond and six since the Nelson Weekly first started publishing, the locally-owned media group has just employed another journalist to keep up with demand. The latest addition to the team is sports editor Jacob Page. Jacob will organise and cover sport for the two newspapers and nelsonlive.co.nz. He comes to the Weekly after six years as a sports reporter at the Timaru Herald and a brief spell at the Blenheim Sun. Jacob says he was keen to come to Nelson because he has family here and because of the region’s growing sporting scene. “Nelson punches well above its weight in terms of the high calibre of athletes the region produces and the quality of sporting facilities the region has.

The Weekly reporting team from left; Jacob Page [sports], Brittany Spencer [nelsonlive. co.nz], Jessie Johnston [Waimea reporter], Simon Bloomberg [Waimea reporter], Kate Russell [Nelson reporter] and Andrew Board [Nelson reporter and editor]. “I’m looking forward to getting to know people in the community and sharing their stories with our readers.” Weekly editor Andrew Board says the appointment was made due to the growth of the papers. “Because our advertisers are getting great results they continue to buy space in the papers, which means we also have

Roof-top burglar takes cash from cafe A rooftop burglar has hit the Richmond Mall again, smashing through a skylight above Ambrosia Cafe and entering the premises using one of the mall’s roof walkways as a ladder on Monday night. Ambrosia’s owner Mishael Sowman found the roof-top walkway still in place and the broken skylight when she arrived at the cafe at 6.45am on Tuesday. “I was concerned that whoever did it was still here,” Mishael told the Waimea Weekly. “They didn’t take much - just a small amount of cash, six beers and some sweet cakes. “They went to a lot of trouble for nothing. I guess they were after cash but we never keep much on the premises.” It is the second time burglars have broken

New principal for Maori school

New principal of Richmond’s Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi, Lara Wharerau at the school last week. Lara has been teaching at the school for the past three years and says she applied for the role because she is passionate about Maori education. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg Nelson’s only Maori immersion school has a new principal after Lara Wharerau took over the role from inaugural principal Merita Waitoa-Paki on Tuesday. Lara has been a teacher at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi, in Richmond for the last three of her 26 years in education. She graduated from Auckland College of Education and subsequently taught at schools in Auckland, Christchurch, Northland and Blenheim before coming to Richmond in 2013. Lara says she has always been passionate about Maori education, working as a learning and behaviour resource teacher for Maori students at Northcote School in Christchurch. She was also a teacher in the bilingual unit at Cobham Intermediate in Christchurch and immersed herself in Maori culture when she worked as a principal of Te Horo School north of Whangarei. “I applied for the principal’s job because I wanted to challenge myself professionally and I felt I had enough experience after having done the job before,” Lara says. “But the job really appealed to me because I’m really dedicated to Maori education and providing the best possible education for our tamariki (young people).” Lara says Merita did a wonderful job of leading the school through its first three years and wants to “continue on the path that Merita started”. She also wants the school to raise its profile and “become a bigger part of the community”. “I’d like to encourage anyone who is interested to come to the school and have a look around. We are part of the community just like any other school,” she says. Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi opened in July 2012 and this year has 46 students and seven teaching staff who only speak te reo Maori at school. The school also has a new puna kainga or pre-school play group onsite that has 10 children.

Television exposure for golf club makeover

Golden Downs Golf Club president Gary Oldham, left, and his committee are excited at the chance of a $1000 clubhouse makeover and some national television exposure in May. The club won the makeover after entering a national competition through the Golf Show. Photo: Jacob Page.

Jacob Page Golden Downs Golf Club is set for a lick of paint and some national television exposure. The country club and its nine-hole golf course have won a $1000 Resene Kiwi Clubhouse Makeover. It means the clubhouse will be given some much needed TLC on May 22 and a television crew from Sky golf show Holden Golf World will be on hand to film progress. Club president Gary Oldham says it’s just the boost the club and its 48 members needed. “Our past president saw it on TV and then passed it on to me and I submitted some photos of what it looks like now and what we’d like it to look like.” Gary says his profession as a sign-writer came in handy to ensure the judges could see what could be achieved. “We’ve been donated a sliding door and we have a wall and window that is rotten, we’re going to do some extensive work on it. “We think greys and charcoal colours will look good with a new logo on top of it.” He says he’d like the clubrooms to look “simple and classy” after the makeover. “We’ve got some preparation to do in the next months, some water-blasting and sanding.” The club was formed in 1946 and has New Zealand’s longest hole – a 659-metre monster. Gary says club member numbers have risen from 28 to 48 over the past 12 months. “It’s all voluntary work and the condition of the course is getting better and better.” He says any extra pair of hands would be welcome on the day. Preparations will stop for the club’s annual Farmers Golf Tournament on May 6.

Memorial ball for local dancer Jessie Johnston Even after she retired from competing, Claire Morgan, nee Maxfield, was always a strong supporter of Nelson DanceSport, which is why her friends and family have decided to host a ball in her memory. "Claire discovered she had bowel cancer when her daughter was 12 weeks old, and over the next 16 months had intensive treatment and surgery. She passed away in August 2014," says Claire's mother, Sandra Maxfield. "Dancing friends of Claire

suggested to Pauline Harris (a friend from school and dancing) that it would be nice to have a ball in Claire's memory. She was a dancer from 1992 and started competing when she was 15, dancing for about 14 years and retiring in 2010 following an ankle injury. She then married and had her daughter Jorja. Claire continued her involvement in dancing on the local DanceSport committee, helping organize dance parties. Dancing was a big part of her life, and it is still part of our lives." The ball will be held on Satur-

day, May 7, starting at 7:30pm, at Club Waimea, with all proceeds going to Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust. We are very grateful to all our supporters, including Sharon from Creative Occasions," says Sandra. "You very rarely get the chance to go to a ball these days, and we welcome even non-dancers who would like to get dressed up and have a lovely night out." Tickets are just $30 per person, including supper, with a formal dress code. To book your tickets, give Pauline Harris a call on 547 4523, or email paul ine_harris@xtra.co.nz

Scouts complete adventure challenge

WEDNESDAY 27 April 2016

I want I want practicality

practicality

Simon Bloomberg Three Richmond Scouts had the adventure of a lifetime, completing a four-day Explorer Challenge as part of their Chief Scout Award. Nathan Larking, 15 and Alexis Faulkner and Karl Newton, both 13, arrived back at the Richmond Scout Den at the A & P Showgrounds last Wednesday after mountainbiking from Kaiteriteri. They had earlier tramped for three days from Canaan Downs to Totaranui, staying at the Awapoto and Whariwharangi huts, before catching a water taxi to Kaiteriteri. The Explorer Challenge has to cover 150km and involve at least three different modes of transport and Alexis says the three-day trek was the hardest section. “The first day was the most challenging physically but it was also the most enjoyable,” Alexis says. “It was so interesting because we went through so many different types of terrain.” Karl, who is a keen mountainbiker, predictably enjoyed the ride from Kaiteriteri along the Tasman Great Taste Trail to Richmond. Scouts Matt Galletly and Jason and Matthew Dunlea, and Karl’s brother Troy and grandmother Lynn Simmons joined the trio at Mapua for the final part of the journey. Karl says the Explorer Challenge is one of the key activities for the Chief Scout Award which is the highest award for scouts. The trio has also completed community work and taken Scout patrols on tramps as part of the award. The next big mission for Karl, Alexis and Nathan is fundraising for the 21st New Zealand Scout Jamboree to be held in Marlborough starting on December 29. About 30 Richmond Scouts will be joining over 4000 storeScouts logo and their leaders from around New Zealand and store logo the world at the Jamboree.

Councillors ‘must go’: It is almost comical to watch Nelson council tell TDC what to do about its planning. After the mess Nelson transport is in, thanks to the septic seven councillors, for these councillors to tell TDC how to plan is incredible. These councillors are hiding behind the traffic issue. Their fear is that, thanks to poor planning, much of Nelson’s central city commerce has been moving to Tasman. And now the same thing may happen to Stoke. These councillors have to go. Otherwise Nelson ratepayers will find that there are few businesses in Nelson to pay rates, and residential rates will climb even faster than they have been as these councillors fulfil their personal spending agendas. Dan McGuire.

How ludicrously, earnestly PC we’re becoming. A “citizen led” drive to become as joyless dreary and institutionalised as Communist, era Bulgaria or Albania. Welcome to 1984 in 2016. Members of the St Paul’s Church community at the vicarage blessing on Sunday.

Blessing of the new waimea parish vicarage Brightwater and the Waimea Plains were some of the first places settled in Nelson. 173 years ago settlers gathered in John Kerr’s Barn for the first Church Service. The first St Michaels Church at Waimea West was built not long after and this was followed by the first Vicarage (ministers house) being built in what we now know as Brightwater in 1855. St Paul’s Church in Brightwater was opened in 1857 and because of the decay in the first St Michael’s, the church we now know as St Michael’s was built in 1867. The Vicarage was burnt to the ground in a disastrous fire in 1903 and was replaced in the following year. Five years ago after, a thorough inspection, it was deemed that it was not economical to repair the 108 year old Vicarage and the decision was made to replace it with a modern building. With much work by

building contractors, generosity of the district and the congregation it was a joy to gather on Sunday for the formal Blessing of the new Vicarage by Bishop Richard. We trust this new Vicarage will serve the community as we look forward to the next 100 years. Thanks to all who have worked hard to bring this project to completion. In scripture we read “ So, my dear Christian friends, companions in following this call to the heights, take a good hard look at Jesus. He’s the centrepiece of everything we believe, faithful in everything God gave him to do. Moses was also faithful, but Jesus gets far more honour. A builder is more valuable than a building any day. Every house has a builder, but the Builder behind them all is God.” (Hebrews 3:1-4). Rev Martin Harrison Brightwater Community Anglican Church

Cameron Jones after competing at Rabbit Island on the weekend. Photo: Jacob Page.

Cameron makes first move towards Coast to Coast Jacob Page Waimea College multisport athlete Cameron Jones has started his race season with a commanding win over a small field in the Shoe Clinic Mountainbike Duathlon Series at Rabbit Island. The 15-year-old who is looking to culminate his efforts with a two-day individual Coast to Coast race next year says he was surprised with how well

his legs stood up to the run. The event started with a 6km run then 18km bike ride and a final 3km run to the finish. “I hadn’t done much running training until the past few weeks so I’m surprised at how well I did, particularly on the first bit. “The competition wasn’t as strong as it was last year so I just kept pushing myself and make sure I was hurting all the time.”

Cameron did a kayak leg of the Coast to Coast earlier this year. Cameron says he has events like this lined up for the next few weeks with the addition of some kayaking. He will compete in the Hutt City Crazyman event this weekend. Cameron says he was drawn to the sport because of its individual nature. “The harder you train, the faster you go.” The next race in the Nelson series is on May 8.

Having recently moved to Nelson from Dunedin, one of the first things on our list was to join in on a fishing club. The one club that stood out for us was the Dawnbreakers fishing club which had a good family vibe to it. We recently joined the club for a trip to Okiwi bay where we met a number of members for the first time, one member who helped me and the family out with the new fishing techniques that we had not used beforehaving only really done lake fishing and trawling for salmon in the Dunedin harbour and needed all the help we could get. The following weekend, back in Nelson, the same member, Nick Roberts, invited me for a day fish out in his boat to show me some fishing spots and put my new-found fishing skills to the test.

New Nelsonian Chris Curtis with his first-ever snapper, a 21 pound whopper. We headed out to Cable Bay where we anchored up, set up our burley and settled down for a fish. I spent the first few hours watching Nick reel in one fish after another, wondering what I was doing wrong. Eventually, my line with a pink flasher rig and a chunk of pil-

chard on screamed off, and after about a 15 minute fight I landed my first-ever snapper (21lb 4 ounces, just saying). I did feel sorry for Nick who didn’t know whether to shake my hand or push me overboard, but nevertheless, thanks to Nick for the day out and putting us on the spot.

Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy brings plenty of interest The Top of the South VMX club are holding their annual Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy and Club Champs on Sunday May 1 at Tadmor. This year is the 12th running of the Ray Anderson Memorial. Ray was member of the Nelson motorcycle club from 1947 to when he passed away in 2003 and spent 52 years as secretary or treasurer, as well as being a member of the MNZ executive in the early 1960’s. Ray received the service award medal from MNZ in 1996 and also the Nelson community service award in 2002 for long-standing and valuable contribution to the sport of motorcycling.

Ray raced all over the country and was involved in most motorcycle businesses in Nelson until he retired at age 65. The Ray Anderson Memorial Classic Trophy recognises this contribution and is raced for by a different class each year drawn on the day which gives all senior riders the opportunity to race for the trophy. All the classes race for the club champs and the Tapawera Hotel cup for the overall club champ. The 2016 event is proudly sponsored by Morley Motorcycle & Marine. Sign in from 8am and racing starts at 10am. For more info, see www. sportsground.co.nz/tosvmx or phone Rob Anglesey (03) 522 4007.

Tasman golfers look to impress SportS at SI age-group championships

FOOTBALL: Two goals from Joel Harden helped Nelson Suburbs Seals to a 3-1 win over Nelson College first XI in Nelson Bays Division One football. In other results; Tahuna beat Wakefield 2-0, Richmond Athletic defeated Marlborough Mariners 3-2 and FC Nelson were too strong for Nelson Suburbs First XI 2-0. A late winner from Ben Wright earned Nelson Suburbs a 2-1 win over Halswell in the Mainland Premier League game at Saxton field.

Jacob Page Tasman Golf is sending a 13-strong team to the Under-16 and Under-19 South Island Junior Interprovincial in Ashburton starting on Tuesday. The team had one of its last training sessions at Nelson Golf Club with club pro Glyn Delany last week. Tasman will put five-person teams in both age groups and will compete against Canterbury Aorangi (North Canterbury), Otago and Southland. The best four scores for each of three rounds will go towards deciding a winner. The event doubles as the South Island Age Group Champs for individual golfers, which is played over a three-round stroke-play format. Tasman’s two female golfers Lizzie Neale, 12, and Eve Clarke, 16, will compete in their respective girls age-group sections. Tasman Golf development manager Chris Pugh says the team has experience, with just one debutante in 15-yearold Josh Wright, but it will be

RUGBY LEAGUE: Both games in round three of the Tasman Rugby League competition in round three ended in draws. Victory Phoenix and Wanderers Wolves drew 2626, with Victory missing a late conversion. Richmond Rabbits and Tahuna Tigers played out a 32-all draw. GOLF: Nelson golfer Ryan Chisnall sits on top of the New Zealand Golf Order of Merit. Chisnall finished fourth at the Akarana Open on the Charles Tour. He finished at -10, six shots off the eventual winner.

Our boys should do well because we have some strong players here, but getting used to a new course will be a major factor.” Chris says 18-year-old Greenacres golfer Andrew Drummond will be one to watch, along with Nelson Golf Club’s Sam Nichol

“Andrew’s an experienced golfer now who has represented Tasman at a senior level and so has Sam. I think if the rest of the boys can front up and produce what they are capable of in their handicaps then the team will go well,” Chris says. Nelson will host the New Zealand Secondary Schools and Age-Group Championships in August, where Nelson College golfers will represent the district. A number of individuals will also compete in the event.

Waimea Old Boys RFC Waimea Old Boys juniors to be welcomed www.wobrfc.co.nz

Jacob Page

The importance of good club culture trickles down from the top at Waimea Old Boys. The club’s JAB contingent will hold its junior club day on Saturday in an effort to welcome new players and their families into the Waimea Old Boys environment. JAB Club secretary Ange Huhu says it is

important everyone has a chance to meet prior to the season as well as them having the opportunity to get a feel for the club. Waimea Old Boys has 305 junior players spread across 20 teams as well as a new JAB chairperson in Mark Blom and JAB club captain Marc Hunter The day will begin with a Sanitarium sponsored breakfast and hot chocolates with

games from under-6 ripper rugby through to the older teams starting at Jubilee Park from 10am. “It’s a good fun, family event where people can be introduced to coaches, parents and fellow players as well as having a look around.” Ange says there will be a sausage sizzle and a bouncy castle as well as the chance

for families to buy last minute club supplies like team socks and the awesome new Waimea designed headgear. Ange has also established a Waimea Old Boys JAB Facebook page where information and photos are shared on a regular basis. The Juniors will also be involved in the senior club day which will be held on June 18 at Jubilee Park.

Waimea Old Boys surge past Moutere Jacob Page

Waimea Old Boys used the wind to their advantage to pull away from Moutere 37-22 in their Tasman Trophy rugby game in Blenheim. Co-coach Mark Milne says his team did well to earn parity on the scoreboard in the first half while playing into the wind and made it count in the last 20 minutes of the game. The game was locked-up at 17-all at halftime. An early Waimea try helped settle the nerves after a couple of slow starts. “The opening try gave us confidence and we were able to hang in there into the wind. With Waimea leading by one point midway through the second half, it looked like a tense finish was in store until the visitors made better use of the conditions. “It was pretty tight for 60 minutes before we made use of the wind at our backs and I think that told on (Moutere) in the finish. Mark says while Waimea’s scrum struggled throughout the game, the forwards proved to be strong ball carriers on the fringes of rucks and generally won the loose ball contest. “I feel like we had the better of it at ruck time and we gave our backs some good ball to try to

Mark says the rest of the backline was more threatening and looked after the ball. Experienced No 8 Jeff Lepa also impressed, setting up a try and scoring one himself to help seal the victory. His combination with open side

flanker Troy Mangan was influential. The bonus point win would get the team excited about their second consecutive away trip, to Kaikoura, to battle competition newcomers East Coast. “This win is just what the boys

needed,” Mark says. “We’re going to leave a day early for this weekend and do some things as a team. “They haven’t been easy-beats in Marlborough and they will be hard to roll on their home track,” he says.

New Tasman Utd coach comes to town

Jacob Page

New Tasman United football coach Richard Anderson is aware of how lucky he is to be in a coaching role with a clean slate. The 29-year-old, who will coach Tasman United in its inaugural National League season, caught his first glimpse of the talent in the region on Saturday when he saw Nelson Suburbs 2-1 Mainland Premier League win over Halswell at Saxton Field. Richard says, while the region is looking to enhance its own football identity he is looking to do the same. “This is one of those rare times as a coach that you have a clean slate,” he says. He says the role is an opportunity Richard for him to transition into a head Anderson. coaching position. “I’ve had the opportunity to do player development roles in England and then went over and did a similar thing with the Cook Islands. When this role came up I thought it was time to step up.” Richard says Tasman United will play a style of football to “excite” fans. The National League competition is due to kick off in November.

past 7000 points this season. Only Ronnie Joyner’s 8616 points stands in front of him. Phill has made a career out of being a deadly three-point shooter and has a lifetime average of over 38 per cent in the NBL. This season he’s above that at 44 per cent. All but ten of those 400 games have been played in Giants colours. "Nelson is a special place for me, as is the Trafalgar Centre," he says. "I have so many great memories in this building and the people of Nelson have always been so loyal." Phill says he is still enjoying the game but isn't thinking too far ahead. "It's the old cliche, one game at a time," he says. "I've had some great memories in Nelson and hopefully there will be a few more before this season ends." For full match report of Monday’s game see www.nelsonlive.co.nz

Phill Jones and records seem to go hand-in-hand. "When you've played this long you're bound to earn a few by default," the veteran smirks in the pre-game shoot around. "It feels like any other game but if it provides the guys with more incentive to get a much-needed win, then that's good." The Mike Pero Nelson Giants veteran became the first man to play 400 NBL games on Monday, during the Giants 95-85 loss to the Canterbury Rams at the Trafalgar Centre. The 42-year-old debuted in 1993 and is in his 22nd season in the league. "It feels like it's been five minutes, not 22 seasons," he says. Phill is the second all time leading points scorer in the NBL having gone

Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Tsunami Maps and Meetings

Keep Richmond Beautiful Committee Annual General Meeting

The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group will this month publish maps of the areas that could be affected if a tsunami hit our shores. The tsunami evacuation maps are intended to act as a guide for residents of the areas that could be affected should there be a threat of tsunami and are for information only. Similar maps have been published around New Zealand. The maps will be published on the Civil Defence website, nelsontasmancivildefence.co.nz, on 27 April. Those interested in learning more about the tsunami risk and evacuation maps are invited to attend one of the public meetings that will be held throughout the region in May. Public meetings in Tasman Tuesday 3 May – Motueka Community Board 4.30 pm – 5.40 pm, Motueka Community Board meeting, Motueka Service Centre, Hickmott Place, Motueka. Saturday 7 May – Club Waimea 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm, Club Waimea, Queen Street, Richmond. Monday 9 May – Mapua Hall 7.00 – 8.00 pm, Mapua Community Association, Mapua Hall Tuesday 10 May – Takaka, Kaiteriteri 10.00 am – 11.00 am, Golden Bay Community Board meeting, Takaka Fire Station; 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm, Kaiteriteri Campground, Kaiteriteri.

Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards 2016 Don’t forget that entries for the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards close next Friday (29 April 2016). So make sure you enter a group today by visiting www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards Everyone that enters a group will be invited along to attend the Nelson Tasman Community Awards, which is an inspiring and heart-warming evening. Anyone can enter as many groups as they like, groups can even enter themselves! And don’t forget, everyone that enters a group will go in the draw to win a $100 power voucher. So take this chance to say ‘thank-you’ to those local heroes in your community.

How are we doing? From Friday 6 May we will be conducting our annual survey to find out how Tasman residents think we are performing. In supporting and developing our communities through the activities and services we provide, we also need to look closely at how well we are delivering our services now and into the future. The residents’ survey helps us to track our performance and hear your views on what we do well and where we can improve. The best way to do this is through an independent and impartial interview of a representative cross-section of Tasman people. The results of the survey will be made public. They form part of the Council’s formal reporting and are a critical ingredient in planning for further improvements to our services. For this reason, we greatly appreciate those residents who are contacted taking the time to be involved. The survey is totally confidential. National Research Bureau will undertake the telephone survey.
