New tsunami evacuation maps released by the Civil Defence this week show that large parts of Richmond and Nelson will need to be “evacuated immediately” if a “long or strong earthquake” hits the region. Online maps have been produced by civil

defence groups around the country to identify evacuation zones in the event of a tsunami. The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group released their map on Wednesday and group controller Roger Ball says “a significant proportion of our urban population” is located within one of the three evacua-

tion zones. The colour-coded map shows red, orange and yellow shore exclusion zones for tsunamis of less than one metre, one to three metres and above three metres. Roger says the map makes it clear a “long or strong” tsunami could affect a lot of people” in Nelson and Tasman.

“The map show that we have a lot of lowlying areas, so potentially there are parts of our coast that would be affected by various kinds of tsunami,” Roger says. “The key message is that people need to think about the risk - if you feel a very large earthquake,

Anzac Day services around Tasman keep getting bigger with over a thousand people gathering in Richmond’s War Memorial Gardens and hundreds attending services in the district’s rural towns. There was standing room only in the War Memorial Gardens with many of the estimated crowd of 1400 spilling onto the adjacent footpath and out onto Cambridge St. Services at Brightwater, Wakefield, Tapawera, Murchison, Mapua and Lake Rotoiti were also popular, leaving Richmond-Waimea RSA president Ross Norgate overwhelmed with emotion. “I don’t know what to say - it’s been absolutely wonderful. We easily have as many people as we had last year.”

He says the schools are teaching children about the significance of Anzac Day and they are embracing that history. “I really enjoy seeing all the young ones here wearing the medals to Anzac Day services. It’s a great tribute to their ancestors and they are wearing history.” Doug and Mary Hill were the guest speakers at the Richmond service which featured hundreds of returned service men and women, including one of the RSA’s oldest members, Graeme Walker.

The 93-year-old veteran served with the 23rd Infantry in Italy from 19431945. Doug spoke about their journey to Gallipoli for last year’s Anzac centenary commemorations. Interestingly, Doug and Mary were following in the footsteps of Doug’s great-grandmother Eliza O’Donnell who visited the grave of her son Jack in Turkey in 1924 - Jack died aged 21 on April 25, 1915, at Anzac Cove. At Brightwater, former Richmond resident Commander Brendon Oakley, spoke of the courage of the Anzacs soldiers. The New Zealand flag flew on a flagpole donated by Charlie Taylor of Taylors Contracting.

Shade sail returned after article

The shade sail that was stolen from the Tasman Great Taste Trail near Harley Rd last week has been returned by an “anonymous receiver” who handed it into Nelson Police last Thursday. The $1500 sail was stolen from a popular stopping place on the Great Taste Trail earlier this month. Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust chairwoman Gillian Wratt says the thieves would have had to use a ladder to unscrew and cut down the shelter and take it away by a vehicle.

It had the great effect of an anonymous receiver handing it back to the police tonight.” Gillian says she is delighted the sail has been returned and it will be put back in place as soon as possible. She says the positive response to the theft indicates that people regard the cycle trail as a valuable community resource.

Reporting team grows again The Weekly just keeps on growing. Almost 11 years after the Waimea Weekly was founded in Richmond and six since the Nelson Weekly first started publishing, the locally-owned media group has just employed another journalist to keep up with demand. The latest addition to the team is sports editor Jacob Page. Jacob will organise and cover sport for the two newspapers and nelsonlive.co.nz. He comes to the Weekly after six years as a sports reporter at the Timaru Herald and a brief spell at the Blenheim Sun. Jacob says he was keen to come to Nelson because he has family here and because of the region’s growing sporting scene. “Nelson punches well above its weight in terms of the high calibre of athletes the region produces and the quality of sporting facilities the region has.

Roof-top burglar takes cash from cafe A rooftop burglar has hit the Richmond Mall again, smashing through a skylight above Ambrosia Cafe and entering the premises using one of the mall’s roof walkways as a ladder on Monday night. Ambrosia’s owner Mishael Sowman found the roof-top walkway still in place and the broken skylight when she arrived at the cafe at 6.45am on Tuesday. “I was concerned that whoever did it was still here,” Mishael told the Waimea Weekly. “They didn’t take much - just a small amount of cash, six beers and some sweet cakes. “They went to a lot of trouble for nothing. New principal for Maori school

Simon Bloomberg Nelson’s only Maori immersion school has a new principal after Lara Wharerau took over the role from inaugural principal Merita Waitoa-Paki on Tuesday. Lara has been a teacher at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi, in Richmond for the last three of her 26 years in education. She graduated from Auckland College of Education and subsequently taught at schools in Auckland, Christchurch, Northland and Blenheim before coming to Richmond in 2013. Lara says she has always been passionate about Maori education, working as a learning and behaviour resource teacher for Maori students at Northcote School in Christchurch. She was also a teacher in the bilingual unit at Cobham Intermediate in Christchurch and immersed herself in Maori culture when she worked as a principal of Te Horo School north of Whangarei. “I applied for the principal’s job because I wanted to challenge myself professionally and I felt I had enough experience after having done the job before,” Lara says. “But the job really appealed to me because I’m really dedicated to Maori education and providing the best possible education for our tamariki (young people).” Lara says Merita did a wonderful job of leading the school through its first three years and wants to “continue on the path that Merita started”. She also wants the school to raise its profile and “become a bigger part of the community”. “I’d like to encourage anyone who is interested to come to the school and have a look around. We are part of the community just like any other school,” she says. Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi opened in July 2012 and this year has 46 students and seven teaching staff who only speak te reo Maori at school. The school also has a new puna kainga or pre-school play group onsite that has 10 children.

Jacob Page Golden Downs Golf Club is set for a lick of paint and some national television exposure. The country club and its nine-hole golf course have won a $1000 Resene Kiwi Clubhouse Makeover. It means the clubhouse will be given some much needed TLC on May 22 and a television crew from Sky golf show Holden Golf World will be on hand to film progress. Club president Gary Oldham says it’s just the boost the club and its 48 members needed. “Our past president saw it on TV and then passed it on to me and I submitted some photos of what it looks like now and what we’d like it to look like.” Gary says his profession as a sign-writer came in handy to ensure the judges could see what could be achieved. “We’ve been donated a sliding door and we have a wall and window that is rotten, we’re going to do some extensive work on it. “We think greys and charcoal colours will look good with a new logo on top of it.” He says he’d like the clubrooms to look “simple and classy” after the makeover. “We’ve got some preparation to do in the next months, some water-blasting and sanding.” The club was formed in 1946 and has New Zealand’s longest hole – a 659-metre monster. Gary says club member numbers have risen from 28 to 48 over the past 12 months. “It’s all voluntary work and the condition of the course is getting better and better.” He says any extra pair of hands would be welcome on the day. Preparations will stop for the club’s annual Farmers Golf Tournament on May 6.

Memorial ball for local dancer Jessie Johnston Even after she retired from competing, Claire Morgan, nee Maxfield, was always a strong supporter of Nelson DanceSport, which is why her friends and family have decided to host a ball in her memory. "Claire discovered she had bowel cancer when her daughter was 12 weeks old, and over the next 16 months had intensive treatment and surgery. She passed away in August 2014," says Claire's mother, Sandra Maxfield. "Dancing friends of Claire

suggested to Pauline Harris (a friend from school and dancing) that it would be nice to have a ball in Claire's memory. She was a dancer from 1992 and started competing when she was 15, dancing for about 14 years and retiring in 2010 following an ankle injury. She then married and had her daughter Jorja. Claire continued her involvement in dancing on the local DanceSport committee, helping organize dance parties. Dancing was a big part of her life, and it is still part of our lives." The ball will be held on Satur-

day, May 7, starting at 7:30pm, at Club Waimea, with all proceeds going to Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust. We are very grateful to all our supporters, including Sharon from Creative Occasions," says Sandra. Scouts complete adventure challenge

Simon Bloomberg Three Richmond Scouts had the adventure of a lifetime, completing a four-day Explorer Challenge as part of their Chief Scout Award. Nathan Larking, 15 and Alexis Faulkner and Karl Newton, both 13, arrived back at the Richmond Scout Den at the A & P Showgrounds last Wednesday after mountainbiking from Kaiteriteri. They had earlier tramped for three days from Canaan Downs to Totaranui, staying at the Awapoto and Whariwharangi huts, before catching a water taxi to Kaiteriteri. The Explorer Challenge has to cover 150km and involve at least three different modes of transport and Alexis says the three-day trek was the hardest section. “The first day was the most challenging physically but it was also the most enjoyable,” Alexis says. “It was so interesting because we went through so many different types of terrain.” Karl, who is a keen mountainbiker, predictably enjoyed the ride from Kaiteriteri along the Tasman Great Taste Trail to Richmond. Scouts Matt Galletly and Jason and Matthew Dunlea, and Karl’s brother Troy and grandmother Lynn Simmons joined the trio at Mapua for the final part of the journey. Karl says the Explorer Challenge is one of the key activities for the Chief Scout Award which is the highest award for scouts. The trio has also completed community work and taken Scout patrols on tramps as part of the award. The next big mission for Karl, Alexis and Nathan is fundraising for the 21st New Zealand Scout Jamboree to be held in Marlborough starting on December 29. About 30 Richmond Scouts will be joining over 4000 storeScouts logo and their leaders from around New Zealand and store logo the world at the Jamboree.
